She Wears It Well

In a camel Max Mara coat, actress Scarlett Johansson channels golden age retro chic in New York City
Well, this puts my January flat shoes and baggy trousers slump to shame. Wowsers, Scarlett Johansson. There is a reason you are a film star.
In this get-up, slipped on for an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman in New York yesterday, Scarlett could be the killer heroine of a Raymond Chandler novel. It's classic Hollywood, it's golden age retro but boy does it work today. She's styled to the nth degree, of course, but because Scarlett is the gal she is, she somehow makes it look unstudied.
But putting to one side the Veronica Lake rolls of hair, the Valentine red lipstick and the assassin's black glasses courtesy of Karen Walker (when in doubt about sunglasses lenses go for blackout), let's spare a moment for the coat.
That coat! It's Max Mara, naturally, King of the Camel, and it's the Mimma coat from the autumn/winter 2013 Atelier Collection, if you're interested. The sheen of the lower half, the casual wrap belt, it's like Veronica Lake's winter dressing gown. Such is its power that I'm sure if we slipped one over our baggy trews and flats this week, we'd probably all look like a movie stars too. No?
"Lady Mary brought me celebrity, something you can either be affected by or manage. I continue to do everything as before" Michelle Dockery
Spoiler alert for all the millions of fans of Downton Abbey, Lady Mary gave me some clues about what we will be seeing on our TV screens soon. To obtain this information, I had to insist, implore and beg without restraint. Fortunately Michelle Dockery is used to this kind of behavior.
Indications are to be found also in the fashion editorial: at the beginning of season 4, in fact, Lady Mary Crawley is bowed down with grief. In the first few episodes, she languishes in her bedroom in mourning dress, incapable even of holding her baby in her arms.
In terms of character, Michelle Dockery is light years away from Mary from Downton Abbey and in her life there is clearly a pre- and post-Downton. Now proposals are coming thick and fast: "I have just finished shooting an action film, Non-stop, and there is a project for an American comedy. I am also producing a TV series with my sister".
